Other than copper, which accounts for 70% of the country’s total exports, Zambia exports sugar, tobacco, gemstones, cotton and electricity. Based on data from ZamStats, Zambia’s main export trading partners are Switzerland (45% of total exports), Chi-na, DRC and South Africa.
The mining sector is the country’s largest power consumer, using 51 percent of total generated electricity, followed by the domestic sector at 33 percent. Only 43 percent of Zambians have access to the national power grid (67 percent of urban residents; and 14.5 percent of rural residents).
Zambia’s electricity market is structured as a single-buyer market, with ZESCO acting as the sole off-taker and bulk retailer of electricity through the national grid.
From a continental perspective, 42.8% of Zambia’s exports by value was delivered to European countries while 29.8% was sold to importers located in Africa. Zambia shipped another 26.2% worth of goods to Asia.
The Electricity Act regulates the generation, trans-mission, distribution and supply of electricity to enhance the security and reliability of electricity sup-ply in Zambia. It codifies the rules on tariff setting and introduces the concept of intermediary power trading, a concept that was missing from the previous regulatory framework.
Zambia’s main import products are refined copper, refined petroleum, crude petroleum, nitrogenous fertilisers and mixed mineral or chemical fertilisers. The main source countries for Zambia’s imports are South Africa, China, United Arab Emirates (UAE), India and DRC.

The global energy storage battery cabinet market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 500% in the past three years. Battery cabinet storage solutions now account for approximately 60% of all new commercial and residential solar installations worldwide. North America leads with 48% market share, driven by corporate sustainability goals and federal investment tax credits that reduce total system costs by 35-45%. Europe follows with 40% market share, where standardized cabinet designs have cut installation timelines by 75% compared to traditional solutions. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at 60% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing battery cabinet system prices by 30% annually. Emerging markets are adopting cabinet storage for residential energy independence, commercial peak shaving, and emergency backup, with typical payback periods of 2-4 years. Modern cabinet installations now feature integrated systems with 5kWh to multi-megawatt capacity at costs below $400/kWh for complete energy storage solutions.
Technological advancements are dramatically improving solar power generation performance while reducing costs for residential and commercial applications. Next-generation solar panel efficiency has increased from 15% to over 22% in the past decade, while costs have decreased by 85% since 2010. Advanced microinverters and power optimizers now maximize energy harvest from each panel, increasing system output by 25% compared to traditional string inverters. Smart monitoring systems provide real-time performance data and predictive maintenance alerts, reducing operational costs by 40%. Battery storage integration allows solar systems to provide backup power and time-of-use optimization, increasing energy savings by 50-70%. These innovations have improved ROI significantly, with residential solar projects typically achieving payback in 4-7 years and commercial projects in 3-5 years depending on local electricity rates and incentive programs. Recent pricing trends show standard residential systems (5-10kW) starting at $15,000 and commercial systems (50kW-1MW) from $75,000, with flexible financing options including PPAs and solar loans available.
