Curtailment first appeared in Chile in August 2015 and had been increasing substantially, hand-in-hand with wind and solar generation. In 2016, some 398GWh, or 8% of total wind and solar generation went unconsumed in Chile. In 2017, that rose to 1,179GWh (14%).
From a 13% combined share of generation today, wind and solar surge, to supply 40% of generation by 2030; by 2050 they produce two thirds of Chile’s electricity. Utility-scale batteries see a large uptake from the mid-2030s, providing critical flexibility to the system by shifting solar electricity towards the evening peak.
