Data on the wind resource in 33 locations in South Sudan are available. Wind energy potential generally poor during rainy season. Locations south and north east of the country have the least potential. Possibility of development of small wind turbines for electricity generation.
South Sudan is endowed with high solar PV potential boasting more than 10 hours of daily sunshine – approximately solar radiation of 5.5 – 6.0 Kwh/m 2 /day year-round.
Hitherto, no significant research has been conducted to ascertain the actual potential of geothermal power generation in South Sudan. However, several rift basin features with uplifts and faulted blocks especially in the Equatoria region, offer geological conditions potentially conducive to accessing higher heat flux at reasonable wells depths.
The hydroelectric potential of South Sudan is well over 2,105 MW with Fulla-falls-890 MW, Shukoli-235 MW, Lekki-410 MW, Bedden-570MW and Juba barrage-120 MW. However, more studies are needed to quantify the actual potential of mini-hydro sites stochastically distributed across the country especially in the greater Equatoria region.
Currently, given clean energy poverty, about 70% of South Sudan population depend on traditional utilization of biomass such as wood fuel, charcoal, crop residue and animal dung to provide their cooking and heating energy needs. Besides, the country is rich in forest and other woody biomass covering over 70 million hectares of land surface.
